Although the virus that causes swine vesicular disease (SVD) is different from that causing foot and mouth disease (FMD) it produces a disease in pigs that is clinically indistinguishable from FMD.
This disease should always be considered if sudden widespread lameness appears with vesicles or blisters on the snout, tongue and tops of the claws. In most countries it is notifiable and if suspected must be reported to the authorities immediately.
