Septic pedal arthritis

Septic pedal arthritis is a bacterial infection that usually gains entry to the distal interphalyngeal (pedal) joing from an interdigital legion which then tracks across the joint to discharge above the coronary band. The foot is swollen with obvious widening of the interdigial space and a discharging sinus(es) above the coronary band. In chronic cases, there is considerable widening of the interdigital space and loss of hair around the coronary band. Chronic cases usually do not respond to antibiotic therapy. Digit amputation by a veterinarian is usually necessasry.
